6 doors

Behind door one is a trip wire which sends a poisonous dart into your heart. You become immobilized and can only wait for the poison to take your life.

Behind door two is a raging inferno, making your skin blister and peel. The heat is tremendous but you manage to make out the silhouette of someone standing triumphantly on the other side of the flames.

Behind door three there is colloseum. You realise you are in full battle armour with a sword and shield. Someone challenges you and you fight hard but they overpower you forcing you onto the ground with the point of their blade resting on your neck. The emperor tilts his thumb earthwards and you feel a blade piercing your neck killing you.

Behind door four you find something that you never thought you would see again. It’s your dead mum. She rasps “I’m not your mum. I am now the oracle. I foresee you are going to die.” And with that she stabs you in the heart.

Behind door five is a crevasse but you haven’t noticed. You take a step and fall, fall, fall for a metre. Thank god for edges you think. I would have fallen down there had I not grabbed this edge. You look down and see paradise. Beach deck chairs, icy drinks and and assortment of other luxury items. You’re wondering how to get down there without breaking a bone or two when, you realise that there’s something on you back and it looks like a parachute. You let go of the edge and pull a cord. Unfortunately it’s just a backpack and no parachute comes out. You fall into the deck chair and the sudden weight makes the drinks bump a little. One falls into your hand but unfortunately you're dead.

Behind door 6 is a message.

The first you’s are repeated 1,000,000 times.

You die of old age.

  1. Particularly gruesome ways to die, Harris. I like door 3 the best. The idea that someone holds the decision about whether you live or die in their hands is a sobering thought.
